The cessation of substantive treatment during the holidays; an increase in viral infections linked to the resumption of community life; exposure to certain allergens within schools; exposure to formaldehyde, marker of the presence of volatile and mold organic compounds in classrooms.
While health insurance alerted to this phenomenon on August 18, it is the turn of Gregory Pariente Foundation to make seven recommendations in order to prevent risks.
1 – Be attentive to alert signals: breathing difficulties, whistling, night awakening … Parents and children must succeed in identifying the signs that prove that asthma is no longer controlled.
2 – Resumption of background treatment: this is one of the main causes of the peak of asthma attacks at the start of the school year, the stopping of the background treatment, without medical advice, during the holidays. It is therefore important to resume your basic treatment against asthma but also against allergies, before the start of the school year.
3 – Avoid allergens: allergens are present in classrooms. To protect yourself from it, the foundation recommends that children avoid sharing the same coats of coach, to rub the clothes of others in the corridors in particular.
4 – Adopt good hygiene practices: wash your hands regularly, cough in your elbow, do not share the gourdes or other objects in contact with the mouth … At the address of the schools, the Gregory Pariente Foundation, recommends the classes well by opening the windows daily 10 minutes before the arrival of the students, but also during recreation.
5 – Helping children to better manage stress and improve asthma control thanks to family exercises: a short routine on slow breathing evening will help young people reduce the start of the school year and improve respiratory function and asthma control. “This practice contributes to better tolerance for effort, to appeasement of the nervous system,” adds the foundation.
6 – Having your child vaccinated against flu is an important tool to avoid the risk of severe exacerbations, pneumonia and serious influenza. Asthma is indeed the first comorbidity in patients hospitalized for flu, especially in children.
7 – Meet the director of the establishment upstream of the start of the school year in order to send him the personalized action plan written by the doctor and discuss the management of the child’s treatment at school. Objective: to guarantee the medical monitoring of children and their safety at school.
Note: According to the Gregory Pariente Foundation, stress could be a risk factor in children. To date, there is no evidence that the stress of the start of the school year causes crises in children. However, in 2024, SOS Doctor noted two concomitant peaks, that of asthma consultations in those under 15 and consultations for anxiety among 11-17 year olds. “A potential cause that requires being supported,” notes the foundation.
