Internally, the announcement of the end of the name “ID” by the director general of Volkswagen would have made noise: most of the employees being visibly happy that this strategy ends. The first model that will bear a new name will therefore be the ID.2, which we will discover at the Munich Motor Show. And it should resume the patronym of a safe bet at Volkswagen.
In addition to the Tuareg, another end is preparing at Volkswagen. From an internal source, our colleagues from the Wolfsburger Allgemeine claims to have learned that the CEO of the brand, Thomas Schäfer, would have announced internally the confirmation that the ID range would disappear in the short term. Not that the models will be deleted purely and simply, but it will be a question of naming the next arrivals otherwise so that the manufacturer finds a little consistency. Recall that it was the former big boss of the German group, Herbert Diess, who had largely contributed to the rise of the electric news program and this ID range.
Difficult beginnings
The arrival of the ID.3 on the market was not done without incident. For a first model of a new electrical platform, there have been many setbacks, especially on the part of electronics and computer science. It was therefore not the dream debut for Herbert Diess who then wiped a big setback, in a year all the more critical since it was the exit of the Covid.
But with the restyling of the ID.3 and a very aggressive pricing repositioning, especially in Germany, Volkswagen straightened the bar in a fairly spectacular and unexpected way. Today, ID.4, ID.3 and even ID.7 are among the best -selling electric cars in Europe. Rarely have we seen such a turnover on a model with a bad reputation in such a short time. If the success finally seems to be there, Volkswagen will not, however, embarrass the ID range. It is now acquired: this name will disappear. But to leave what instead? Rumors are going well concerning in particular this famous “ID.2” that we will discover in the coming weeks.
The end of IDs applauded by employees
Last February, the CEO of the Volkswagen brand, Thomas Schäffer, announced internally to its employees that the end was near for the “ID” range. The scene would have been quite amazing with an “applause thunder” of the employees present that day. Finally, a sign that the idea of IDs has never made its way within the group. An automotive economy professor at Wolfsburg University confirms: ” This is undoubtedly the right approach to bet on names that reflect VW promises, such as reliability, longevity and timeless design. Models that have experienced such good results do not need to be renamed differently. VW does not need fanciful names ». For the ID.2, you can therefore already bet on a familiarity such as Polo. But for the time being, Volkswagen keeps the secret, even if the rumor begins to swell on the name of “e-polo”, resembling what had been done for the old e-golf. Case to follow, at the Munich Motor Show.
