Back from vacation, Bart de Wever will have to get out of his silence

“In politics, you must have hard skin”: Bart de Wever poses with new recruits … Unexpected

Despite tensions, a decision will have to be made in the coming weeks. “”If we do not progress on the question of the recognition of the Palestine State by the General Assembly of the UN in September, there will soon be nothing to recognize“, warned the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prévot (committed) on Thursday in committee. On the initiative of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, the United Nations will debate the possibility of recognition of the State of Palestine. Several powers like Canada or the United Kingdom have already announced their intention to position itself in favor of this recognition.

It also remains to decide the question of the possible sanctions against Israel, another subject of tensions within the federal majority.

Federal budget making

In addition to international issues, the Prime Minister will also have to move forward on other government projects. Among them, the development of the budget for the year 2025-2026, expected for the Speech of the Prime Minister on the State of the Union in the Chamber, constituted constitutionally for the second Tuesday in October.

Until then, the Wever team will therefore have to work on its budget, following the trajectory validated by the European Commission which provides for a reduction in the deficit under 3 % by 2029. A trajectory aimed at cleaning public finances, while integrating certain expenses, especially in defense. Belgium, like the other NATO countries, is committed in June to invest 5 % of its GDP in the defense within ten years, an effort of just over 30 billion euros. It remains to decide how to finance these investments. One of the tracks mentioned – which seems to be most likely – is the sale of state assets, in the form of participations in certain companies.

All, by concretizing the famous “summer agreement”, announced just before the holidays, which should be the subject of new discussions within the government.

Shootings in Brussels

Another file in the news in recent weeks: the resurgence of violence in the streets of the capital. Since the beginning of July, at least 22 shootings have taken place in Brussels-the last two date from Saturday and Sunday-mainly in the municipalities of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and Anderlecht.

Theo fruck: Premier Ministre Parcy

On Tuesday, during a press conference, the prosecutor of the King of Brussels launched a new appeal to the federal government. According to him, the government “hear but does nothing“, and does not grant the additional” necessary “means to combat organized crime. In the field, some local representatives are also addressed to the Federal, and ask for measures to combat insecurity in the streets. A subject on which the Prime Minister remained, there too, silent. He is nevertheless at the head of the Ministerial Task Force aimed at fighting drug traffic and violence.
