In the Belgian Cup, the Mechois created the surprise by eliminating FC Mandel Izegem, resident of D2 ACFF (3-1) this Sunday. Despite a complicated start to the match, the Gaumais managed to overthrow the trend and win a historic qualification. Next Sunday, they will challenge Bilzen (D1), at home
The history continues for Meix-Devant-Virton. Opposed this weekend at the FC FC Mondel Izegem as part of the Belgian Cup, the Mauves managed to thwart the forecasts to win 3-1 at the end of a breathless match. A performance that opens the doors to the next round, where they will find an opponent of Division 1, Bilzen.
The beginning of the meeting did not, however, did nothing good for the locals. Very quickly, visitors take control of the game and multiply the opportunities, mainly by their right flank. Van Vaerenbergh, Desmet and Desot thus carry the danger several times in the Gaumais rectangle, but without concretizing. For his part, the Méchois porter Gérald Brolet intervenes several times and preserves the draw.
It was not until the 12th minute to see the first real local offensive. And on this blow, the efficiency is total: on a corner, Olivier Schmit appears and surprises goalkeeper Beernaert. Meix opens the scoring against the course of the game. But the joy is short -lived. Barely five minutes later, Arthur Desot, equalized. It is logical and amply deserved. At the break, the parity score appears flattering for Meix, happy to return to the locker room without more damage.
Surprising: Meix controls his opponent in the second half
Shortly after the recovery, Gérald Brolet can thank his transversal which repels a strike from Van Vaerenbergh. It will actually be the last big opposing alert in this match. Gradually, the Gaumais regain confidence, set up their block and take advantage of the spaces left by their opponents. They also make winning changes.
In addition, the locals get a first penalty. Alexandre Laurent advances and transforms without trembling. A few minutes later, the same player has the ball at 3-1 at the end of his foot but ships his attempt above. The entrance to Zannini gives a boost to the attack. Stiring on its wing, the number 77 causes a second penalty a quarter of an hour from the term. This time, it is Loan Wérard who takes responsibility. With composure, he places the leather out of the goal of the goalkeeper and seals the Mechois success: 3-1.
Place now at the next challenge. Next Sunday, Meix-Devant-Virton will welcome Bilzen, Division 1 ACFF training. A prestigious meeting for the Gaumais, who will once again play without complex.
