Benjamin Netanyahu would have changed objective in Gaza? According to several Israeli media, the Hebrew Prime Minister said that he was trying to obtain the support of his cabinet to fully occupy the Palestinian territory.
“We undertake to free Gaza from the tyranny of these terrorists”said the Israeli Prime Minister in a speech published on X. “Many residents of Gaza come to see us and tell us that they need help. And that’s what we will do”he also assured.
A senior official close to the Prime Minister would also have assured that operations would be carried out “Even in areas where hostages are detained”. “And if the chief of staff of the army does not agree, he will have to resign”he assured.
Because Benjamin Netanyahu will have to face Tsahal, who would oppose this takeover. The army would consider that it would take years to eliminate Hamas infrastructure and that the hostages could be executed in the event of an Israeli breakthrough.
However, last month, on Euronews, the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar assured that his country had “No intention” to control the Palestinian enclave in the long term. After 23 months of war against Hamas, the Israeli army would control 75 % of the Gaza Strip.
A plan for the post-war period?
No other details were given about what the plans would look like for a strip of post-war Gaza, but they could correspond to Those of a document consulted by Euronews and dated December 2023.
This proposal entitled “Gaza Security and Recovery Program, How Should the Day After Like”, was written by the Israeli Defense and Security Forum, a group of more than 35,000 reservists of Israeli security forces and the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs (Center de Jérusalem for security and foreign).
It implies economic reconstruction, the construction of infrastructure and, as the authors of the study say, “The uprooting of a deadly ideology”also qualified as “de-nazification”.
“In order to prepare for the new situation, even if the results of the military operation have not yet been achieved, it is necessary to prepare an ordered plan for controlling the Gaza Strip after the fall of Hamas”is it written in the document.
This plan explicitly excludes the sovereignty of the Palestinian authority and the presence of the UN UNW agency as a source of humanitarian aid. However, the document does not specify if Israel intends to annex the Gaza strip.
The authenticity of the document was confirmed in Euronews by a senior government official as well as by Ohad Tal and Simcha Rothman, two members of the far -right national religious party, which is part of the power coalition.
The announcement of Benjamin Netanyahu comes after months of negotiations in Qatar between Israel and Hamas, the mediators striving to overcome obstacles on both sides and to reach a cease-fire and a hostage liberation agreement, while the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is deteriorating.
