In the presence of a separate cycle path, cyclists must borrow it. This obligation also applies to electric bikes, electric scooters, cargo bikes, good old mopeds and, of course, cyclists on their racing bikes. Unfortunately, offenses are frequent. The fine is however moderate, at 30 francs.
Since July 1, 2025, this obligation no longer applies to certain types of bikes on certain cycle paths. In simple terms, the “cycle path” symbol applies to all bikes and other similar devices. However, if a complementary panel or a ban signal displays the moped symbol, this means that mopeds, fast electric bikes (45 km/h) and heavy cargo bikes (250 to 450 kg) are prohibited. In the presence of a complementary panel comprising the symbol of the moped and the mention “optional”, the municipalities are free to leave these types of bikes the choice to take the cycle path or the road.
In addition, other rules relating to bikes have been modified. Important innovations relate to cargo bikes: on the one hand, the new category of heavy cargo bikes for commercial use has been created. On the other hand, conventional family cargo bikes can now transport up to four children instead of two, provided that the Cargo bike has four secure places with belts.
