On Wednesday September 3, Breel Embolo will have two good reasons to be in the Basel region.

The first is the internship of the Swiss team, which will prepare its first two qualification games for the 2026 World Cup, against Kosovo (September 5) and Slovenia three days later. Two games that will be contested at Parc Saint-Jacques.

But also, two days before the start of this campaign, the Monaco striker is expected to justice. Embolo is indeed summoned before the Court of Appeal of the canton of Basel-Ville, the titles of the Ch Media group on Tuesday reveal.

The object of this appearance? A case dates back to 2018, and for which Embolo was tried at first instance in June 2023. He was then sentenced to 45 days amended to 3000 francs suspended.

Insisting and threatening

The facts had taken place on May 27, 2018. At the wheel of his car in the Steinenvorstadt Basel district, he was waiting for friends in front of a nightclub. A girl asks her for a selfie. The player, then aged 21, accepts. He offers the latter’s friends to do the same. One replied dryly that she does not need it. An accompanied boy is laughing. It doesn’t appeal to Embolo.

According to the judgment consulted by the German media, the Swiss international came out of his car, with two friends. He would have been insistent towards girls. The boys repel him. The tone rises. So Embolo would have uttered threats. This is the object of his conviction. One of his friends would also have picked one of the men present, breaking his nose. He was also convicted of bodily injury.

Following the judgment, Breel Embolo and his friend appealed. The presumption of innocence continues to apply. It remains to be seen if he will be present at the hearing, for which he did not ask to be exempt, according to Ch Media. In case of absence, it risks a fine.
