Canada | The value of building permits recorded a 9 % drop in June

(Ottawa) The total value of building permits experienced a 9.0 % drop in June compared to the previous month in Canada, to be 12.0 billion, according to statistical Canada data published on Tuesday.


After leaving in May, the intentions of institutional constructions fell into Ontario in June, thus contributing to this overall decrease of 36.7 %. However, the agency indicates that the value of this component remains high nationally, encrypting at 1.7 billion.

Growth in this sector was supported by that recorded in Alberta, with the license issued for a hospital in the Red Deer region.

As for permits, granted in the industrial sector, Quebec and Ontario contributed to an increase of 192.7 million, or 21.8 %, to total 1.1 billion in June in Canada. It is the only component up from one month to another.

Commercial construction intentions fell 3.9 %, to be 2.1 billion in June. Quebec, British Columbia and Nova Scotia have contributed to this decline, somewhat balanced by the new permits issued in Ontario for the construction of warehouses, interior recreational facilities and retail and wholesale stores.

The residential sector recorded permits of building with a total value of 7.1 billion in June, down 4.3 % compared to May.

Statistics Canada notes that the component of multifamilial housing in British Columbia was the main factor behind this decline, after having contributed most to the growth of the sector in May, while Ontario has reduced this decrease.

In constant dollars, the total value of building permits during the sixth month of the year fell 9.5 % compared to May.

Compared to June 2024, the total value of building permits increased by 6.9 %.
