At August 19, “27 episodes of chikungunya totaling 154 cases (…) were identified in France,” summed up the health agency in chikungunya, dengue, west nile … a weekly assessment. Moreover, The previous week, the balance sheet had 23 homes for 115 cases.

These are indigenous cases, which result from contamination in the territory, and not imported following an outside contamination.

Even if several of these episodes are now enclosed. the summer of 2025 is of an unprecedented scale in terms of Aboriginal cases of Chikungunya, whose virus is transmitted from one human to another via tiger mosquitoes, in mainland France.

These cases far exceed their records from the previous years – never more than thirty in the same summer – a situation fed by a major epidemic of Chikungunya at the start of the year in Reunion. the biggest in the past twenty years. This facilitated the arrival of imported cases which then gave rise to on-site contaminations.

Another disease transmitted by the tiger mosquito. dengue does not total, for the time being, as many indigenous chikungunya, dengue, west nile … cases as in 2024 – with a record of 66 in mainland France. But a weekly increase was also recorded. with seven identified homes – one enclosed – for 13 cases, against six homes and eleven cases the previous week.

This situation is part of a context where the tiger mosquito. accustomed to hot climates and still absent from the metropolis a few decades, is now present on almost the whole territory, against a background of global warming.

Finally. another disease has been added for a few weeks to this exceptional picture: “West Nile” fever or Western Nile fever, which is not transmitted by the tiger mosquito but the Culex variety, more common in mainland France.

Aboriginal cases have not yet recorded this summer in mainland France – 13 in the last count. against several tens certain years – but are distinguished by their broader implantation: for the first time, chikungunya, dengue, west nile … several have been identified in the Paris region and not only the South.

The three diseases have close symptoms, akin to a flu -like state with fever and muscle pain.
