“Easier than taking a job”: he frauded elders from Quebec

An unscrupulous fraudster who stripped elders in several regions of Quebec because it was “easier than to occupy a job” will have to continue to languish in prison, since he is still too dangerous to find himself in the open air.

“You have fooled several victims by abusing their emotional reaction caused by the hope of helping relatives in emergency situations,” recently castigated the Quebec commission for parole.

Right after, she rejected the request for parole of Jonathan d’Anjou Francoeur, a 25-year-old Saint-Jérôme resident who has been serving since September a little under two years for her “grandparent” type fraud.

With an accomplice, the fraudster thus contacted vulnerable elders by claiming to be a loved one who urgently needed a sum of money.

“Once the first contact has been established, a second call is made in order to define the payment terms, the amounts of which varied between $ 4,000 and $ 9,000,” said the Commission.

In some cases, the victims paid, while others refused. Sometimes it was the bank employees who raised a red flag, thus making it possible to thwart the fraud.

Victims have been identified “in various regions of Quebec”, according to the Commission. D’Anjou Francoeur had also been caught in the Rouyn-Noranda sector.

To party

During his hearing in front of the CQLC ten days ago, Anjou Francoeur had confided that at the time, he was looking for pleasure and idleness. He then started to envy his criminal frequentations, which made money and could thus celebrate as they please.

“You wanted to party, drink alcohol and consume cannabis,” notes the commission. You explain that [la fraude] was easier than having a job. “

The fraud of D’Anjou Francoeur made him lose his freedom, in addition to being ordered to compensate the victims.

Since then, he swears to have won in maturity, so that he now wishes to live a row life. However, he will have to wait, since his awareness is still only at the embryonic stage, according to the commission which “notes certain positive changes, but which are not, at this stage, significant”.
