Fall strawberry season: what to expect as a price and as a taste

You are not dreaming: field strawberries are back in grocery stores (and at a good price).

From the beginning of August to the first gels of October, fall strawberries are harvested in fields all over Quebec, indicates the director general of the association of producers of strawberries and raspberries of Quebec, Jasmine Sauvé.

While summer strawberries (which arrive in June in grocery stores) are sown in winter, those in the fall are in the spring. The plants produce until October.

And good news: the taste is the same as at the beginning of summer!

“Fall strawberries can sometimes be smaller and firmer, but it really depends on the varieties that are produced,” explains Jasmine Sauvé.

What do the crops look like this year?

“We really have beautiful fall strawberries harvests. We have a lot of abundances. This week and next week, we are likely to be in the weeks when there are the most strawberries in Quebec, “says Ms. Sauvé, who stresses that fall strawberries have been popular for fifteen years already.

The sun, the heat and the little rain of the past few weeks have offered perfect conditions to the producers, even if they are hot in the fields.

They have to harvest fruit earlier in the morning and be more meticulous, because strawberries are very delicate when hot.
