Switzerland responded to the Call for the distress of Montenegro by deploying firefighters and a major fire-fighting device that currently ravages the country. She urgently deployed a support mission comprising 22 firefighters and several specialized vehicles, reports The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAE) In a statement this Friday, August 15.
Since that day, members of the fire and rescue service (SIS) of Geneva, the protection and rescue service of Lausanne, the cantonal insurance establishment of the canton of Vaud (ECA) and the rescue and fire center of the Sierre region are on the job in the affected areas.
International Vital Aid
Their mission is to fight vegetation fires, defend critical infrastructure and strengthen local urban means. A critical situation requiring international aid. Montenegrine authorities have mobilized all of their national resources, including army and police helicopters, firefighters and volunteers.
Despite these efforts, the persistent winds continue to feed the flames, making certain areas uncontrollable. Many evacuations have been ordered in the face of the advance of fires. It is in the face of this critical situation that Montenegro requested international aid, asking which Switzerland quickly responded.
Fire multiplication
As of Wednesday, a pre -detail made up of two employees of the Directorate of Development and Cooperation (DDC) and three Officers of the SIS of Geneva had gone to Podgorica to prepare for the arrival of reinforcements and coordinate operations with the local authorities.
This deployment marks the first joint operation between the DDC and the SIS of Geneva since the signing of a collaboration agreement in the spring of 2025. The mission is under the aegis of the DDC and is part of international efforts to support Montenegro in the face of this natural disaster.
The situation in Europe is still worrying with the multiplication of forest fires, particularly in the Mediterranean basin, where several countries face fires of an exceptional scale.
