Why were wild blue wild boars discovered in the United States? An anti-free product used by farmers could be at the origin.

Dan Burton, a Californian hunter specializing in the regulation of wildlife, discovered wild boars with blue flesh. “I’m not talking about a little blue, I’m talking about a fluorescent blue,” he told Los Angeles Times. This scourge concerns several wild boars.

An anti-neur product used by farmers and containing rats poison would be the cause of this phenomenon. Authorities have warned that other wild boars may also be infected.

This surprising discovery of wild blue wild boars would be linked to the exposure of animals to “Diphacinone anticoagulant rodenticide”, an anti-noisible product used by farmers to “control the populations of rats, mice, squirrels and other small animals”, according to a press release from the Department of Fisheries and Fauna in California (CDFW).

Health risks

The poison intended for rodents would have been regularly consumed by wild boars, sometimes modifying the color of their flesh.

A study carried out in 2018 by the University of Nebraska revealed that Rats poison residues were present in more than 8 % of wild boar fabric samples from populations close to agricultural and residential areas that used pesticides.

Local authorities warn the hunters, who run risks to their health if they consume game from the region, exposed to these rodenticides. The CDFW recalls that all the animals contaminated by this poison do not necessarily have blue flesh.
