Mme Shea was a member of the cabinet of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper as Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, national income and the economic promotion agency of Atlantic Canada.

The Prime Minister of Prince Edward Island, Rob Lantz, said in a statement on Thursday that Gail Shea was a pioneer and a pillar of the progressive-conservative party, as well as a “fair, respected and trustworthy voice”.

The conservative chief Pierre Poilievre paid tribute to him on social media, writing that the former minister was a “figure greater than life” of the conservative movement.

Mr. Poillievre said that she was “full of energy, warm, good humor and that she embodied the hospitality of the Maritimes”.
