France will recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September in New York, President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday on his social networks.

(Keystone-ATS) “True to its historical commitment to a fair and lasting peace in the Middle East, I decided that France will recognize the State of Palestine. I will make the solemn announcement to the United Nations General Assembly, next September, “wrote the French head of state on X and Instagram.

France will then co -reside with Saudi Arabia an international conference at the level of heads of state and government aimed at relaunching the so -called “two -state”, Palestinian and Israeli solution.

This conference, initially scheduled for June, was postponed at the last minute due to the war between Israel and Iran. In the meantime, a ministerial meeting will be held on July 28 and 29 in New York.

To date, at least 142 states have recognized a Palestinian state, according to an AFP count. The United States and Israel firmly oppose such a project.

Switzerland expects

Switzerland has not even recognized the State of Palestine. Ignazio Cassis judges that the recognition of the State of Palestine will one day come. At the end of his visiting visit to the Middle East on June 11, the Federal Councilor estimated the recognition of a premature Palestinian State, but it will come “one day”.

“If we target the solution to two states, it is logical that one day the recognition of Palestine is made. The question is when, depending on the credible criteria for both parties, “he explained to a journalist from the Keystone-ATS press agency on the return aircraft.

“The urgency is today that the war in Gaza ceases and that the civilian population is rescued,” hammered the French president on X.

In this context, “finally, the State of Palestine must be built, ensure its viability and allow by accepting its demilitarization and by fully recognizing Israel, it participates in the safety of all in the Middle East,” he added.

By crossing the step of recognition, France intends to “make a decisive contribution to peace to the Middle East” and “will mobilize all those of its international partners who wish to take part,” also writes Emmanuel Macron in a letter addressed to the president of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas.
