Takata airbags continue to flow a lot of ink. While more than 2.5 million vehicles are affected by the recall in France, certain networks of general garages have announced their refusal to take charge of the models equipped with these famous defective airbags.
The Takata airbag affair takes a new turn. While the manufacturers are busy taking charge of the recalled vehicles, or about 2.5 million in France alone, Certain channels of general garages now refuse to intervene on the cars concerned.
Takata airbags: an extraordinary case
We have heard Takata airbags for many months. These defective air cushions equip many models, produced by different manufacturers. The spectrum of the vehicles concerned is very wide: Peugeot, Citroën, DS, BMW, Audi, Ford … in total, in France alone, 2.5 million vehicles are recalled by brands. 800,000 of which are mentioned in « stop drive », That is to say a traffic ban.
This decision, made by the government at the end of June, follows several deaths resulting from the explosion of these famous Takata airbags. The executive was even further, and now obliges manufacturers to provide customers with replacement vehicles, Until the airbags of their vehicle are replaced.
Although brands do not communicate a specific time for interventions, The government, on the other hand, requests that vehicles be taken care of within 15 days. The concessionaires are therefore likely to be taken over in the coming weeks.
Today, nearly 2.5 million vehicles are recalled by manufacturers, just in France.
Some brands do not want to take any risks
The garages belonging to the networks of the various manufacturers are forced to intervene on vehicles equipped with Takata airbags. However, this is not the case for general signs. Several of them have also announced that they now refused to take care of the cars concerned.
This is particularly the case of the Speedy network, as reported by TF1. The brand asks its customers to check if their “Vehicle is the subject of a manufacturer’s recall”. And this, before an intervention, for any type of repair. Speedy also adds that “Its centers will not be able to maintain or repair your vehicle as long as the airbags concerned have not been replaced”.
The garages refusing to intervene on vehicles with defective Takata airbags, will then require a proof of replacement. “After replacing airbags and on presentation of proof of the intervention, we can maintain your vehicles in the best conditions to continue your mobility”said the Speedy brand.
