Monday afternoon, the Geneva fire and rescue service (SIS) intervened for a fire in a hall of the sorting center and recycling of the Sogetri company in Satigny. The disaster was mastered at 7 p.m. using three hand spears.

Four people were injured, one of whom had to be helicoptered to the Geneva University Hospitals. Their vital prognosis is not committed.

“When we arrived on site, we found a strong release of smoke from a compartment containing 30 m³ of boxes and papers, inside a sorting hall,” comments Nicolas Millot, spokesperson for SIS. The employees of the company were already fighting against the flames with a spear, “he underlines:” their reaction and their action made it possible to limit the spread to the entire stock, present in the compartment, as well as to the installation used to compress paper. “

The spokesperson specifies that these companies are equipped to fight fires and that the employee reflex was up to par: “However, this fire was too substantial and required our intervention. Our collaboration was good. ”

Four Sogetri employees were inconvenienced by the smoke and taken care of by the paramedics. A firefighter had a “hot stroke, which happens in this type of intervention”, but that did not need any particular care.

In total, 20 professional firefighters with six devices and 7 volunteer firefighters from the town of Satigny with a machine were mobilized.

Two fires in the canton of Vaud

Site machines were used to evacuate the stock and complete the extinction outside the hall. “We had to dismantle the burn heap, getting him out of the hall and brewing everything to be sure that no embers relaunches the fire. A police investigation could determine the causes of the fire, but “due to the brewing of the material, it will certainly be difficult to know the reason,” said Nicolas Millot.

Last week, two other fires took place in Vaudois companies or warehouses sorting waste.
