The state of Geneva is the largest employer in the canton. Over 18,000 employees work there in diverse fields. This Wednesday afternoon, the Council of State presented its apprenticeship policy to the press. Anne Hiltpold, vice-president, announces that at the start of the school year, 280 apprentices will be trained within the State of Geneva (small state). This figure, stable vis-à-vis last year, represents 5.6% of state apprentices.

At the level of the great state, 1079 other apprentices will be engaged in the various institutions and subsidized entities. This represents an overall rate of 8.4%.

These rates exceed the minimum objective of the 4% established by “the policy of learning the State of Geneva”, adopted in May 2021, which aims to support and encourage Duale vocational training (Editor’s note: shared between school and business) in the canton. This policy concerns one in five apprentice in Geneva, more than 1,200 young people out of a total of 5,400 apprentices last November.

12.6 million for Palexpo

At the start of the session, the president of the Council of State, Thiery Apothoz, returned to the decisions taken by the Council at his weekly meeting on August 13. The government has notably adopted, for the Grand Council, a bill opening an investment credit of 12.6 million in support of the development of a multifunctional hall in Palexpo. Thierry Apothoz noted the importance of this infrastructure for the attractiveness of the Geneva region. The purpose of this hall is to host congresses and other professional or general public events.

The Council of State also adopted the localized plan of an extension of the Tour hospital. This complementary building is part of a larger project aimed at creating a health campus including a research center.

Thierry Apotheloz finally notes that three initiatives have resulted. They relate to future votes “for free crèches”, “for free people from parascolary” and a municipal initiative “for the creation of an outdoor swimming pool in ONEX”.
