The progress recorded in the ongoing international negotiations between 184 governments to write the first world treaty against plastic pollution “are not sufficient,” said the diplomat who presides over UN debates on Saturday to Geneva.
“Many questions have remained unanswered,” said Ecuadorian diplomat Luis Vayas Valdivieso.

The 184 countries that have been negotiating since Tuesday in Geneva, in a new session added after the failure of Busan’s discussions in South Korea at the end of 2024, gave a draft text in the night from Friday to Saturday taking stock of their work in technical working groups.
The text on the plastic treaty went from 22 to 35 pages and the number of parentheses, that is to say subjects on which no agreement was reached between the delegations, swelled from 371 in the initial version to almost 1500.
