The Grand-St-Bernard tunnel will be completely closed to transit traffic during nine nights, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. No passage will be possible to or from Italy, including by the pass.
(Keystone-ATS) Various night closings of the Toules gallery located upstream of the Grand-St-Bernard tunnel are planned from August 18. This decision should allow a final restoration of the damaged work on April 17.
The closures will be coordinated with the operator of the Grand-St-Bernard tunnel in order to minimize the impact on traffic, according to a press release published Thursday by the Federal Roads Office (OFROU).
Once all the work completed in mid-November, the Toules gallery will be practicable again without restriction. Since this spring, its crossing has been carried out in two -way mode.
Three months of work
The work will be carried out from August 18 to mid-November, with the aim of being completed, before the arrival of winter. The realizations of realization being limited in time, night closures will be necessary to start with the period from August 25 to 29. These works aim to restore the level of protection necessary to allow safe circulation and on two ways.
In addition, waiting times will be extended, up to a potential of 15 minutes between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. for 10 nights. The majority of the work will be able to be carried out with traffic management on a track in place.
Damaged over 300 meters
On April 17, an avalanche had triggered at the height of the Toules gallery on the road to the Grand-St-Bernard. The rocky blocks and the trees carried away by the snow masses had damaged the infrastructure over a length of about 300 meters. The axis had to be closed to transit traffic from Italy. The work had been reopened by the Ofrou, nine days later, on a single track.
