A new flotilla in charge of humanitarian aid will take the sea from several Mediterranean ports to Gaza to “break the illegal Israeli blockade,” the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg said on Sunday evening, who will be part of it.

“On August 31, we launched the largest attempt ever made to break the illegal Israeli blockade in Gaza, with dozens of boats from Spain. We will join dozens of others on September 4, starting from Tunisia and other ports. ”

Humanitarians, doctors, artists – including the American actress Susan Sarandon, the Swedish actor Gustaf Skarsgård or the Irish actor Liam Cunningham – as well as other activists from 44 countries will take part in this initiative called “Global Sumud Flotilla”, according to the organizer’s website.

The number of boats that will go to Gaza has not been specified.

During the night of June 8 to 9, the Madleen sailboat, with 12 French, German, Brazilian, Turkish, Swedish, Spanish and Dutch activists on board, had been arranged by Israeli forces about 185 kilometers west of the Gaza coast. They were then expelled, some after being briefly detained.

The “Global Sumud Flotilla” is described on its site as an “independent” organization and “affiliated to any government or political party”.

The Israeli offensive, which has lasted for 22 months, has killed at least 61,430 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, led by Hamas, figures that the UN judges reliable.

The war was triggered by the attack on Hamas against Israel in 2023, which left 1,219 dead, mainly civilians, according to an AFP count based on official figures. (Jah/ATS)
