Hasselblad reveals its future medium format device: boosted performance and increased intelligence in perspective

  • Hasselblad belongs to Dji
  • Hasselblad stamped optics are integrated into several DJI drones, and DJI technologies equip certain Hasselblad cameras
  • Hasselblad’s next medium format camera should benefit from a performance gain

Direction Göteborg, Sweden, where the manufacturer of cameras Hasselblad and the Chinese manufacturer Oppo announced this week the renewal of their partnership. The two brands claimed to want, thanks to this prolonged collaboration, “push the limits of mobile photography even further”.

The current high-end smartphone of OPPO, the Find X8 Ultra, seduces with its Hasselblad optics and its X-Pan shooting mode, which imitates the rendering of a famous silver format of the Swedish brand.

This is an evolution of the X8 Pro released in 2024, already praised as “the best photo system never seen on a smartphone”. An in -depth test of the Ultra model is expected soon.

Oppo is not the only Chinese actor with whom Hasselblad has established close ties. The Swedish brand also provides the optics of several DJI drones-a company which, let us recall, bought Hasselblad several years ago.

During the press event, Bronius Rudnickas, Hasselblad Global Marketing Director, shared some elements on the benefits of this acquisition.

Among them, the presence of an internal SSD of 1 TB in recent medium format models such as the X2D 100C, a component designed by DJI. A notable asset, especially since these cameras also offer the possibility of adding a memory card, thus avoiding any dependence on internal storage.

Another advantage: DJI, much more imposing on the world market, has easy access to essential components such as sensors. Like most recent devices, Hasselblad cameras integrate sensors made by Sony.

The question of an improved autofocus on future models has also been mentioned. A track confirmed by Bronius, which promises a “better … and smarter” system.

An expected evolution. The main weakness of the X2D remains its perfectible autofocus, despite 100 MP shots with striking natural colors – a rendering that largely surpasses what a full traditional format allows. The focus quickly becomes a challenge, especially for shallow depth portraits.

The next Hasselblad camera therefore arouses strong expectations. And if the last leaks are confirmed, it could happen earlier than expected.

The successor of the X2D could arrive very soon, with new DJI technologies on board

The Mirrorless Rumors specialized site recently unveiled American regulatory documents as well as images of what seems to be X2D II, accompanied by a first technical sheet.

This sheet mentions a 100 MP sensor (dimensions 44 x 33 mm – much larger than full format, and identical to that used by Fujifilm GFX boxes such as GFX100 II), stabilization of 8 IL, and an internal SSD of 1 TB. So many characteristics already present in the current X2D 100C, considered as one of the best hybrids in terms of image quality.

What would change then? According to Mirrorless Rumors, the next novelty could come from an Autofocus Lidar system, developed by DJI. In theory, this would improve the speed of monitoring of the subject, even if it will be necessary to wait for the first tests to have a clear heart.

Can we hope for an autofocus rivaling with those of Sony or Canon? Unlikely. On the other hand, a more reactive and more intelligent autofocus seems within reach. Reliable monitoring of the human eye, for example, is prominently among the expected features for future models.

According to some rumors, this new Hasselblad camera could be revealed in August. A launch which, if confirmed, would promise an image quality always as exceptional, but finally supported by an autofocus at the height.
