Here is the first chief scientific advisor to the Quebec Metropolitan Community

The Metropolitan Community of Quebec (CMQ) appointed a chief scientific advisor to integrate science at the heart of municipal decisions.

The announcement was made by the CMQ on Thursday morning, by press release. “This strategic appointment is part of the growing movement in Quebec which aims to integrate scientific expertise at the heart of municipal decisions, an essential approach to meet the complex challenges encountered by this governance level,” writes the body.

François Proulx will occupy this position. Having worked for several years in the field of environmental chemistry, Mr. Proulx also held management positions within Quebec City.

He obtained first and second cycle degrees in chemistry, a second cycle diploma in environmental management, and a doctorate in water from the School of School of Regional Development and Regional Development of Laval University.

Tendency

The contribution of scientific advisers is a new trend in municipalities, with the challenges now posed by climate change, in particular. Several cities have taken this direction, including Victoriaville, Longueuil and Gatineau, underlines the CMQ.

“I am extremely enthusiastic to associate myself with CMQUEbec in this crucial approach,” said Proulx. It is an honor to be able to put my expertise at the service of an organization which resolutely undertakes to make informed decisions, based on the best scientific knowledge. I see my role as that of a bridge between science and municipal reality, so that we can, together, achieve our ambitious objectives and develop our wonderful territory as harmoniously as possible. ”

Smith request

Jackie Smith, a Quebec Transitional head, had claimed the addition of such a post to Quebec City two years ago. She was delighted with the establishment of this expertise at the CMQ.

“The way the city samples and minimizes the effects of the incinerator’s discharges, the pressure of lobbyists when you seek to improve air quality and the speeches that green reality are also reasons that have pushed me to repeat this idea in the media. I welcome Mr. François Proulx, who will give us the right time and whose role will be essential in the transition that we must start»said M Thursdayme Smith.
