Here is what it means and what to do

A mysterious double logo wifi has gradually appeared on certain Android smartphones and has raised questions among users. Do not panic, this is a new very practical function.

More and more Android smartphones users are faced with it: the appearance of a second, smaller WiFi logo alongside the usual icon in the status bar of their smartphone. Bug of your phone, connection problem with your box, hacking your network?

None of this, fortunately! In reality, this double symbol hides a baptized functionality or “Dual-Channel-Acceleration” in English. Thanks to it, the smartphone can connect simultaneously to the WiFi networks 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz of the same router, instead of having to choose between one or the other.

The interest is double. On the one hand, this makes it possible to obtain higher connection speeds by combining the bandwidth of the two networks. On the other hand, the stability of the connection is reinforced: if the signal weakens on one of the networks, the smartphone automatically rocks on the other to avoid cuts.

This option will notably delight users who need a very efficient connection, such as gamers or those who watch a lot of videos. But beware, some users report on Reddit having noted a reduction in battery life. Appeared in 2019, the “Dual-Channel-Acceleration” is not present on all Android smartphones. It is mainly found on smartphones of Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo or Realme. There are also many users of smartphones Note to report their existence on their devices.

If your smartphone has it, you can check and activate this function. It’s very simple. It is generally enough to go to the advanced wifi settings of the smartphone and check the corresponding option, which can be called “Dual Channel Network Acceleration”, “Double acceleration WiFi” or a nearly variant depending on the model and the language used. Once activated, the icon of the double WiFi logo appears in the status bar to indicate that the functionality is operational.
