The heat that has suffocated Switzerland for a few days has not said its last word. If the temperature peak is expected by Wednesday, things will not really improve later.

The second scorching episode of this summer 2025 strikes Switzerland hard. Our country has been suffocating in heat for a few days already, but the worst is to come. “The temperature peak is expected between this Tuesday and this Wednesday,” said Adrien Michel, meteorologist at Météosuisse.
“In the Lake Geneva and Valais arc, mercury should reach 37 ° C”
The rest of the country will not be spared. The temperature should, in fact, remain much above the 30 ° C mark almost everywhere in Switzerland. 36 ° C are expected in Porrentruy this Thursday, 35 ° C in Neuchâtel, 34 ° C in Friborg and 32 ° C in Vallorbe.
The rest is uncertain, but one thing is certain, continues Adrien Michel: “He will continue to get hot until next week”. And the meteorologist to add:
“Temperatures may no longer reach scorching thresholds, but will stay above 30 ° C”

The heat wave could therefore last almost two weeks. “It can become complicated for many people”note Adrien Michel, who evokes an accumulation effect. Especially since, if the maximum temperatures should (slightly) drop, minimum temperatures will probably do the opposite. In other words, it may be warmer during the night at the end of the week.
Less hot in the Jura
If the whole country suffers, not everyone is staying in the same brand. “The more we go down to the south, the more the temperatures increases,” summarizes the specialist. The Lake Geneva and Valais are the most affected French -speaking regions, while, in the Jura, time could cool off a little more quickly.
And even in the same region, there are important differences: “it is clearly warmer in cities, especially at night,” recalls Adrien Michel. “The heat is absorbed by concrete and accumulates over the days. Therefore, the situation gets worse over time ”.
“In the countryside, on the other hand, temperatures drop overnight, especially if the sky is clear, as is currently the case”

A mass of air that does not move
A depression above the Atlantic is responsible for this situation. It brings up very hot air from North Africa and pushes it in our direction, explains Adrien Michel. The good news is that Switzerland is on the edge of this air mass. Therefore, we have temperatures slightly lower than those measured in France, where the thermometer has exceeded 40 ° C in several places.
The bad news is that this depression is currently blocked on the Atlantic and should not really move in the coming days. “For things to change, you have to wait for the arrival of a new depression to evacuate this hot air,” informs the meteorologist. And conclude:
“It could happen in the middle of next week, but it is relatively uncertain”
