In Corsica, early payment does not make a recipe in bars

Sits on a terrace of a coffee, choose a drink … and pay it before even consuming it. A somewhat disconcerting logic if you are not used to doing this. Yet on the continent, early payment in bars and cafes is more and more practiced – and without complex. Establishments establish this measure for several reasons. Among other things, saving time but above all, a way of avoiding unpaid. As for large tables, they already practice preparing or communication of the bank card number at the time of booking.

In Corsica, however, this method is struggling to convince. Pay even before you have tasted your still hot coffee: a use that cools more than one, on the side of professionals and consumers.

“It’s out of the question, we are in a relationship of trust with our customers”

Take a drink above all a moment of relaxation. We settle there to decompress, meet and share. Payment comes at the very end, without haste, almost as a formality. In Moriani-Plage, seaside resort of the town of San Nicolao, in Haute-Corse, some operators of bars-restaurants want to preserve this atmosphere deeply rooted in the local culture. When we ask Alex Nicolini, manager of the Bor’di Mare, if he has already thought of imposing a settlement on order, he shakes his head and responds without detour: “This is not our way of doing things. In addition, the leaks to the addition are very rare so we have no reason to set up such a measure.”
