The earthquake occurred at 12:49 pm local time (05:49 GMT) at a depth of 80 kilometers, about 177 kilometers west of the city of Tual, in the eastern province of Moluccas, said the USGS.
The Pacific Tsunamis Alert Center said there were no threats of tsunami.
The Indonesian geophysical agency said in a message on social networks that the earthquake “did not have the potential to cause a tsunami”.
No damage or injured was reported immediately.
The vast Indonesian archipelago knows frequent earthquakes because of its position on the “fire belt” of the Pacific, an arc of intense seismic activity where the tectonic plates collided and which extends from Japan through Southeast Asia and through the Pacific basin.
An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 which had touched the celebrations in January 2021 had left more than 100 dead and left thousands of homeless people.
In 2018, an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 followed by a tsunami in Palu, still in Celebes, had left more than 2,200 dead.
