“I thought it was insane. From the point of view of the United States, the customs surcharge imposed on Switzerland (39%) are counterproductive and harm our good ally, Switzerland, “McGovern said in an interview on Saturday at Blick. “All this will raise the prices, including in the United States, from chocolate to watches through medication.”
Basically, he added, “Donald Trump does not understand the trade balance. I also have the feeling that he sees himself more as a master than as a president. He would like all the countries of the world to get to his knees and do what he wants. ”
“There will be resistances”
Mr. McGovern is convinced that the American president took into account, in the calculation of his country’s deficit against Switzerland, that the exchange of goods and not the services. “Perhaps the Swiss government should explain economic realities to the Trump administration,” advises the elected democrat.
Switzerland, however, exposed to the president the importance of the partnership between the two countries. Asked about this subject, James McGovern replied that “Donald Trump takes time to learn. These surcharges will one day or another have real effects on American consumers. There will then be resistances. “
The elected democrat also recommends that the Swiss authorities do not hesitate to flatter Mr. Trump. It would be sensitive to such an attitude. In any case, he “does not have a logical thought”.
The deputy still says he does not have a crystal ball. “I can just tell you that Switzerland is an important partner, and that Trump is moving. It’s his way of doing things. ” The Caucus of Friends of Switzerland at the American Congress brings together around thirty American deputies – from both sides – and was created in 2003.
