Lamal: Klug sickness insurer goes bankrupt and stops its activities
The company based in Zug will stop its activities at the end of the year. To protect the 9,300 insured, the OFSP declared it insolvent.

Google MapsIt is not every day that a sick person goes bankrupt. This is the case, however, of the insurer Klug. The company, based in Zug, has indeed been withdrawn its authorization to practice social health insurance on December 31, 2025, said Tuesday the Federal Office for Public Health.
For some time now, Klug has been in a very difficult financial situation, according to the OFSP. Moreover, the insurer was the subject of reinforced monitoring for two years. Measures had also already been taken to maintain its financial stability. Thus in 2024, the premiums had been increased during the year.
But the situation has deteriorated in “unexpected and decisive way”, writes the OFSP. “The Klug Committee has indeed recently noted that services up to 2.4 million francs had not been registered in the accounts” and that it could no longer face all its financial obligations. He therefore informed the OFSP.
A background for the 9300 insured
The declared bankruptcy of the cash register makes it possible to use an insolvency background which covers the costs of the assured services of its 9,300 insured. Its activation was immediately ordered, explains the OFSP. Which also examines whether bankruptcy has a criminal impact.
For his part, Klug explained, in a statement, that his financial problems were due to the unexpected growth of his insured (189%) in 2022-2023. A leap that led to a huge financial burden that turned out to be “fatal”. Note that the insurer’s bankruptcy will lead to the dismissal of 19 employees.
