The Council-Executive is opposed to the counter-project on the cantonal initiative “for the regulation of large predators in the canton of Bern!”. He has already spoken out against the initiative itself.
(Keystone-ATS) The initiative wishes to give more power to the canton to manage the populations of large predators.
Reworked after its first reading at the Grand Council, the counter-project of the Finance Committee plans to limit the provisions proposed to wolves and bears. All the other major predators, such as the lynx and the golden jackal, are thus not affected by the counter-project.
The measures proposed in the counter-project as well as in the initiative, however, concern an area in which the canton has practically no regulatory competence, said the Bernese executive in a statement released on Thursday. In addition, the claims of the counter-project correspond to the current practice: the shot is ordered by the competent service of the Directorate of the Economy, Energy and the Environment as soon as the required conditions, which are based on the sole damage, are fulfilled.
