Launch of the second edition of the Trophies to’a reef 2025, a call for action to preserve reefs and lagoons

With 4.3 million FCFP, this initiative carried by Ifrecor Polynesia (French initiative for coral reefs) aims to reward concrete and innovative projects working for the health of reefs and lagoons, essential marine ecosystems for ecological balance, economy and well-being of island populations. It is part of the operational implementation of the 2024-2028 five-year action strategy and plan of the IFRECOR Polynesia, ambitious Polynesian roadmap, co-constructed in collective intelligence by local actors from all backgrounds, to implement concrete actions for sustainable protection, catering and management of coral ecosystems.

Objectives: Share traditional knowledge, strengthen scientific knowledge, stimulate local innovation and make all audiences aware of good practices and the urgency of protecting our reefs and lagoons, today seriously threatened by the effects of climate change, the intensification of marine heat waves and pressure of human origin: overfishing, pollution, coastal urbanization, sedimentation …

The Trophies to’a reef are aimed at associations, companies, schools, scientists and citizens mobilized in the field. In all, 13 prizes will be awarded, including a Grand Prix of one million FCFP for the most exemplary project, all categories combined. The flagship prices include: the price of innovation for new solutions for preserving reefs, the price of archipelagos, promoting local resilience actions in the islands and atolls, the awareness price, dedicated to good practices shared with the public, the price of participatory science, new 2025 distinction, for projects involving citizens and communities in the collection of marine data.

Particular attention is paid to education with six school prices of 100,000 FCFP each, ranging from kindergarten to high school, in partnership with the Directorate General for Education and Lessons (DGEE). A strong way to anchor, from an early age, a culture of respect and safeguarding of the marine environment.

Applications are open until Thursday October 2, 2025 at noon (Tahiti time).
