Laval: $ 12,000 of tickets for having put their children at school

A rain of tickets sent by registered mail six months late for having put their children at school caused the indignation of Laval parents, an approach deemed “sneaky” and “dishonest” which was even denounced by the mayor.

“When I saw the agents in the morning, I gave them a sign of the hand and they greeted me in return,” said Leyna Sahl, whose teenager at the Georges-Vanier secondary school, in the Duvernay district.

She was far from suspecting that these police officers were rather present to punish her.

As at least sixty other parents, the mother has received, in recent weeks, tickets for immobilizing herself on the edge of Mondor Avenue, behind the school, in order to drop her daughter. Although placards indicate a ban on parking, according to the parents, this is the only way to put your child on a safe manner. Furthermore, this is what the school management recommends, as registered in the school agenda.

Tickets

“It is clearly a ticket to tickets,” says Sébastien Poupart, who has landed his 15 -year -old daughter for four years.

“If they had warned us, or at the very least awarded a first ticket at the time of the offense, we could have adjusted,” adds Mme Sahl. There, it is done in a sneaky and dishonest way. ”

A Facebook group was created to bring together the parents concerned. Until now, members have calculated that their tickets, which vary between $ 87 and $ 120, total nearly $ 12,000. The offenses date back mainly at the beginning of 2025 and some parents received more than fifteen. According to the findings of Journaltwo police officers seem to have meant the majority of tickets alone.

Unjustifiable and aberrant

Arrested Tuesday evening during the municipal council, mayor Stéphane Boyer supported the many parents who had moved to denounce the situation deemed absurd.

“I will not justify the unjustifiable,” he said right away. It is unacceptable to have proceeded in this way. It’s absurd. “

The mayor even raised the possibility that the issue of these contraventions on the sly could be a form of means of pressure from the police, who were in full union claims when the police carried out these morning operations.

“I have already asked the general management to do an investigation,” he said before encouraging all citizens to challenge the tickets, since he does not have the power to have them canceled.

Contacted by The newspaperthe Fraternity of the Police of Laval refused to make any comments.

The city and its police service indicate for their part having undertaken an administrative investigation, since this way of proceeding “diverges good practices”.

Although they have to feel the city behind them, the parents remain furious, because they will likely have to take work leave in order to challenge contraventions.

“If the police were used for us for their union renewal, it’s really strange and a shame,” concludes Mr. Poupart.
