Locarno: “God will not help” and “White Snail”, two destinies of women between the Croatian mountains of the beginning of the 20th century and contemporary Belarus

For a few years, and this is a good thing for the diversity of stories, which allows you to break a certain monotony, we discover more and more stories centered on female characters from different regions of the world. Second feature by Hana Jusic, God Will Not Help This takes us into the majestic Croatian mountains, filmed in a pictorial way for a story taking place at the very beginning of the 20th century. It all starts overnight when the pious Milena, who lives alone in an isolated farm, suddenly sees a woman of black dressed. She speaks Spanish, says she is called Teresa and evokes a Marko. Milena then understands that it is her sister-in-law and that she is Chilean.

Despite the language barrier, the two women will understand each other. Marko, who had left to look for work in Latin America, married Teresa to it. Here she was who went through the ocean, in the opposite sense, to announce the death of her husband to her family and bury some bones on her native land. In addition to a sister Milena, Marko had brothers, installed above in the mountains with the rest of the community and their herds of sheep. Milena decides to take Teresa.
