Long -term: Quebec will have to deal with an inflated atmosphere

After a warm and unstable first half of summer, the rest of the season could reserve its share of intense precipitation. Thunderstorms, active fronts and masses of tropical air will rhythm the coming weeks.

“A barrel of powder”

The heat and humidity accumulated in recent weeks have boosted the atmosphere, creating an unstable and potentially explosive situation. “We are a bit sitting on a barrel of powder,” illustrates the meteorologist Réjean Ouimet.

Result: the second half of summer could be punctuated by abundant rain episodes, even if the weather context is generally favorable and rather beautiful.

Two factors to remember

Heat thrusts will advance on southern Quebec, but with penetration limited to the north and east, which will generate instability due to temperature contrast. This explains the overabundance of rain since the beginning of the summer and this phenomenon could continue in this region, but elsewhere too.

In addition to this phenomenon, the presence of an anticyclone on the east of the North American continent opens the door to the lifts of hot air and humidity from the Gulf of Mexico. “Whether with or without tropical storm (or left -wing left), these contributions could generate significant rain episodes,” explains Réjean Ouimet.

A big thunderstorm and everything is ruined

Even if summer should remain generally pleasant, the frequency of locally intense events (heavy rain and/or violent thunderstorms) could distort the perception of the season for people who will be victims. You could remember more strokes than long hot and sunny periods.
