Mark Carney will discuss with its Council of Ministers and the Prime Ministers of the provinces on Wednesday, following new US customs rights

The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, will meet his Council of Ministers and the Prime Ministers of the provinces on Wednesday, less than a week after the taxation of new customs duties by the United States.

US President Donald Trump has imposed basic customs duties of 35 % in Canada on products that are not covered by the Canada-US-Mexico (ACEUM) agreement.

These new import taxes took into force last Friday, since the two countries failed to conclude a new trade agreement before the deadline of 1is August fixed by Mr. Trump.

On Tuesday, at a press conference in British Columbia, Carney revealed that he has not spoken to Mr. Trump in recent days. However, he plans to discuss with him when it is appropriate.

The Prime Minister added that around 85 % of trade with the United States remains free from customs duties, since it is covered by ACEUM.

Sectoral customs duties, including those of 50 % on steel, aluminum and copper, remain in force.

The meeting of the Council of Ministers and the conversation between Mr. Carney and the Prime Ministers of the provinces and territories will be virtual.

The Prime Minister of Quebec, François Legault, confirmed that he will take part in the virtual meeting scheduled for the early afternoon.
