Morocco: tens of thousands of demonstrators denounce the “unbearable” situation in Gaza

Tens of thousands of Moroccans demonstrated on Sunday in Rabat to protest the “unbearable” humanitarian situation in Gaza and the normalization of relations with Israel, according to AFP. Scrolling on a central avenue, the demonstrators, equipped with Palestinian flags, chanted “raise the blockade” and “no to standardization”, at the call of a coalition including the Islamist movement Al Adl Wal Ihssane and the left parties.

“The Palestinians are hungry and killed in front of the world,” said Jamal Behar, a protester. Hibattallah Rifqat, a young participant, accused Israel of “ethnic cleaning”, seeing his presence as a means of amplifying the Palestinian voice.

Since 2020, Morocco, which has standardized its relations with Israel, faces recurring demonstrations demanding the repeal of this agreement. Although Rabat called for an “immediate stop of the war in Gaza, he did not call into question standardization. “Denouncing this drama is the least of things,” said Hasna Ouazzani, a demonstrator opposed to any normalization with Israel.
