New clashes broke out on Saturday in anti-immigration demonstrations in the United Kingdom. The police arrested.
(Keystone-ATS) Protesters who called for massive “remigration”, but also groups of anti-racist activists, flocked in the center of Manchester, in the northwest of England, during a walk organized by the far-right formation “Britain First” (Great Britain first).
In London, demonstrators and counter-demonstrators converged on a hotel hosting asylum seekers in the city center, as in previous demonstrations which had sometimes given rise to violence.
In short, in Confrontation in Manchester
In Manchester, the two groups clashed briefly at the start of the demonstration before the police separated them, according to an AFP journalist who was on the scene.
“It’s a walk for the re-migration,” said Brendan O’Reilly, a 66-year-old demonstrator. “Discard them where they come from, do not let them enter-just prevent them from arriving, we have hotels full of migrants and we have our own homeless people who are outside in the street, begging for food and without accommodation,” he added.
Judy, a 60-year-old, retired nurse, said he said to AFP being there because she “refuses to see people full of hatred in the streets of Manchester”. “Do they want everyone to go away or are it only people of color?” I suspect that they are just the people of color they want to see re-migrer, ”she added.
Nine arrests in London
In London, similar clashes broke out in front of the hotel in the Barbican district, before the police intervened. London police wrote on X that his agents had released a crossroads where the counter-demonstrators had grouped. “There has been nine arrests for the moment, including seven for violation of public order,” added the police.
Several incidents have occurred in recent weeks as part of these mobilizations, most of them in the London district of Epping.
