The new rules in force from Thursday provide that restaurateurs can impose a maximum penalty of $ 10 per person when a group of at least two people do not honor its reservation.
The costs will be imposed if no member of the group arises and the cancellation was not made at least three hours before the scheduled time.
The government has established certain conditions. Restaurateurs are required to inform their customers as possible, confirm reservations from 6 to 48 hours in advance and offer an easy cancellation.
The initial version of the regulation was targeting groups of five or more, but it was finally changed, to the satisfaction of restaurateurs.
The new rules affect 18,000 Quebec catering establishments, which each lose $ 49,000 on average per year due to no-showsaccording to the Catering Quebec association.
The measure could avoid losses of more than $ 400 million in the sector, according to Quebec.
Almost 70% of Quebecers support this initiative to encourage civility, according to a light survey.
