The independent investigation office (BEI) opened an investigation following the third deadly police intervention of the year in Nunavik, which occurred on July 17, 2025 in Kuujjuaq.
The facts occurred around 8:25 p.m., following a call to 911 reporting possible forcible confinement in a home, according to a press release from the BEI.
Police from Nunavik Police Service would have come into contact with an individual involved in the call. During the intervention, he would have approached agents by brandishing a stabbing weapon. The police would then have opened fire, injuring the individual.
The agents would have tried to provide him with first aid while waiting for the arrival of help. Transported to a health center, the person finally succumbed to his injuries.
Two agents were reportedly injured during the intervention.
The BEI has the images of body cameras of the police involved. Nunavik Police Service is the only Canadian police force to use this technology.
In accordance with its mandate, the EIB has deployed six investigators to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the intervention. The Sûreté du Québec was called to support to ensure the integrity of the process.
