Observe, slow down, stop: for a safe school year

While the summer holidays are coming to an end, the children are preparing to go back to school on Monday, August 18. The Jura cantonal police relay the national campaign set up by the Swiss Touring Club: “observe, slow down, stop”. Objective: to educate drivers to adapt their behavior on the road in particular near schools. The cantonal police will strengthen their presence in the field, particularly near schools.

In Switzerland, more than one child per day is the victim of an accident on school. In 2024, 455 children were injured on the journey between their home and the school according to the Federal Road Office. An alarming figure which once again demonstrates the need to act to protect the youngest. The objective of this new campaign called “Observe | Slow down | Stop ”, which will be deployed over 3 years, is to make the school path safer by calling the drivers to adopt simple gestures and to show particular attention.

  • Observer : stay attentive in all circumstances, locate children from a distance and anticipate their movements
  • To slow down : adapt your speed to react in time, especially in areas that are not very visible or little frequented where a child could cross without warning
  • Stop : mark a complete stop when children want to cross because they do not yet have the capacity to properly assess the speed and distance of vehicles

This new campaign echoes the messages learned by children for several years in road prevention lessons: “stop, watch, listen, cross”. By aligning the instructions for children and drivers, the prevention campaign recalls that road safety is a shared responsibility.

The Jura cantonal police are committed daily for the safety and prevention of road accidents. As with previous return, it will strengthen its presence near schools to remind all of the importance of attentive and cautious conduct. Prevention posters will also be placed in the localities of the canton.
