Three sites have been selected to perhaps become the permanent exhibition location of the Panorama of the Battle of Morat (FR), celebrating the event that occurred in 1476. The three variants, the Kanonenmäteli, the StadtGraben and the slope above the swimming pool, still require in-depth clarifications before welcoming the masterpiece of Louis Braun, painted from 1894.
(Keystone-ATS) “The next step will consist for the working group to present the proposals at the service of the regional planning of the canton of Friborg and to collect its opinion. Then, the Federal Culture Office will also be consulted, “said the Foundation for the Panorama of the Battle of Morat 1476 on Wednesday. The file is available for public consultation.
The working group hopes to be able to continue its work in the fall. The objective is to take advantage of the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Morat in 2026 “to seek partners and financing possibilities thanks to a clear implantation concept”, can be read in the press release.
Thirteen sites studied
After the signing of a declaration of common intention for the search for a site in the Morat region, the city of Morat, the foundation for the panorama of the Battle of Morat 1476, the Morat museum, Morat Tourisme as well as the associations friends of the Panorama 1476 and development of the site of the Lac de Morat region created a working group. Of the 13 potential sites studied, three were finally retained.
The dimensions of the work are 100 meters by 10, for a weight of one and a half ton. Classified as Swiss cultural good of national importance by the Federal Office of Culture, the panorama illustrates the battle of 1476 during which the Confederates defeated the Duke of Burgundy Charles the Bold.
The 2002 National Exhibition made it possible to expose it temporarily in the floating cube of Morat’s artepelage.
