Paris: a person dies in an apartment fire in the 17th arrondissement

A deadly fire broke out this afternoon on Monday 4 August, in a building housing emergency housing in the rue de Lévis in Paris (XVII), a narrow shopping artery of the Batignolles, a stone’s throw from the Monceau Park. The claim cost a man of Romanian nationality, according to a police source.

The drama occurred before 3 p.m. The flames ravaged an apartment located on the fourth and last floor of a building from 74, rue de Lévis. The intervention of the firefighters made it possible to circumscribe the fire and thus avoid its spread to neighboring housing.

Forty people evacuated

Forty residents had to be evacuated as a precaution, indicates this same police source. During their gratitude in the disaster apartment, the emergency services made the macabre discovery of the charred body of a man. It would be the occupant of this social housing.

For the time being, the origin of the fire remains indefinite. A judicial police officer of the XVIIth proximity reception and investigation service (Saip) went to the site to make the first observations. In parallel, technicians from the central laboratory of the Paris police headquarters were also called upon.

“This is a deadly fire in emergency housing for an association for helping people in precarious situations,” said the Paris prosecutor’s office. And to add: “A research investigation of the causes of death was opened” this Monday. The 17th century police station is responsible for investigations.
