Two Ontario employees of the Swissport luggage handling company were arrested at Pearson International Airport in Toronto for trying to bring more than 20 kg of cannabis into France worth $ 147,000.
The two luggage handlers were arrested after an investigation started last May on the exchange of baggage label which indicates to airport machines where a baggage must go and to whom it belongs.
“In this case, the baggage label was exchanged, so it seemed that the baggage containing cannabis belonged to a traveler who did not know,” said the RCMP in a statement.
The investigation revealed that the two suspects had manipulated luggage labels without the passenger’s consent, which would have led to illegal transport of around 21 kg of cannabis to France.
Previously, the French national who was detained for suspicions of drug importation from Canada was, after a in -depth investigation, released without accusation, according to federal police.
Dugal Hearne, 51, of Woodbridge, and Edward Wynter, 56, from Brampton, who have been accused of possession and export of cannabis and conspiracy in order to commit a criminal act must appear at the Brampton courthouse on August 6 and 8.
