Physical activity: Ivory Coast in motion to prevent stroke

Under the sponsorship of the Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Indoor Coverage, Mr. Pierre N’Gimba, was held on Saturday August 16, 2025, in the Banco forest in Abidjan, the first edition of the day of promoting physical activity. Initiated by the Primus agency in partnership with the ministry, this meeting, placed under the theme “En Marche, for Life, let’s notify the stroke, one step at the same time”, mobilized a large audience made up of young people, women and the elderly. In a friendly atmosphere, the participants took part in a hike, in fitness sessions, a guided tour of the forest and a country lunch.

Representing the Minister, the Inspector General of Health, Dr. Kpaho Bernard, praised the relevance of this initiative which associates sport, health and awareness. He recalled that physical activity plays an essential role in the prevention of non -transmitted diseases, in particular the stroke (stroke).

Each year, Côte d’Ivoire records nearly 15,000 cases of stroke, 10,000 of which unfortunately lead to the death of patients. Stroke, linked to the obstruction of a (ischemic) blood vessel or to the rupture of a cerebral artery (hemorrhagic), is favored by hypertension, diabetes, smoking, sedentary lifestyle or even poor diet. However, a regular practice of physical exercise, associated with a balanced diet and rigorous medical follow -up, remains the best preventive weapon.

At the end of this first edition, the participants expressed their satisfaction, stressing the educational and unifying nature of the day. Building on this craze, Dr. Kpaho reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to support and multiply this type of actions, in accordance with the vision of Minister Pierre N’Gimba to build a health system more oriented towards prevention.

The day of promoting physical activity is thus promised as an unavoidable citizen and health meeting, where each step counts in the fight against stroke and for a better quality of life.
