“If you invade certain parts of Gaza. the hostages are killed, we will continue to you in public places, during the electoral campaigns and at any time and anywhere,” Shahar Zahiro told AFP, a close to a killed hostage, in a “direct message to the Prime Minister”.

Hamas. which still retains 49 hostages, 27 of which are presumed dead, said on Friday that the Israeli decision to occupy the city of Gaza meant the “sacrifice” of these hostages raised during the unprecedented attack on the Palestinian Islamist movement against Israel on October 7, 2023.

“We are not going to occupy Gaza, we are going to free Gaza from Hamas”, which has run the territory since 2007, said Netanyahu on X.

Following the announcement of this plan. the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Gaza on Sunday at 10 a.m. (2 p.m. GMT), according to several diplomatic sources.

From Germany. however one of the most faithful allies of Israel, to the European Union, via France, China, Russia and many Muslim countries, the announcement of this plan aroused international reprobation.

“New crime”

The president of the Palestinian authority Mahmoud Abbas denounced on Saturday “a new crime which is added to the series of Israeli crimes committed in the West Bank, including in Jerusalem”, stressing “the urgent need to take measures to end it immediately”.

Currently. the Israeli army occupies or operates on the ground in nearly 75% of the Gaza Strip, mainly since its permanent positions in the territory along the border. Israel had already occupied Gaza in 1967 and established a set of 21 colonies, dismantled during its unilateral withdrawal in 2005.
