Porsche confirms the launch of a new petrol SUV in 2028

Porsche abandoned the original Macan in Europe last year, not because he wanted it, but because he had to. The petrol crossover did not comply with the General Security Regulations (GSR2) which entered into force in July 2024, which forced Zuffenhausen to put an end to its production on the Old Continent. It is always available in other parts of the world that do not adhere to GSR2 legislation. However, the days of the first generation Macan are counted since production will end next year. What will follow? A new petrol crossover.

“Significant additional expenses” partially allocated to investments in new petrol and hybrid models will materialize by a new combustion engine crossover. In March, Porsche said it was considering a new internal combustion engine product by “evaluating an independent model line in the SUV segment with combustion and hybrid motorcycle groups”. The decision has been made and the model will be marketed in three years.

During the Conference Conference on the results of the first half of 2025, CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that a new petrol crossover would arrive by 2028. The man who leads the boat to Zuffenhausen described it as a model “very, very typical of Porsche for this segment and which also differentiates from the BEV”. To market it in such a short time, the company “accelerates the process thanks to very short development deadlines”.

Mr. Blume did not specify how the vehicle would be ready by 2028, even if it has just received the green light. We believe that Porsche will rely on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) platform of the Volkswagen group to accelerate development. If so, the crossover should share a lot with the last Audi Q5. This would not be unprecedented, since the outgoing Macan rests on the MLB platform which underlined the Q5 of the previous generation. In fact, Porsche has already said that the new model “would benefit from synergies”.

The last Q5 is the first SUV of the VW group on the PPC architecture and is offered with four -cylinder petrol and diesel engines, rechargeable hybrid configurations, and a more powerful V6 for the very sexy SQ5. The latter is equipped with a 3.0-liter mild-hybrid engine developing 362 horsepower. It remains to be seen if the new Porsche crossover will reflect the Q5/SQ5 range, but it is unlikely that the 2.0 TDI will be offered. The company is committed to abandoning diesel engines in 2018 following the dieselgate scandal.

Since it is still early to test the prototypes, all we have is the promise of a new design highlighting “the characteristic profile of Porsche”. Mr. Blume specifies that the newcomer will evolve in the same segment as the Macan, and that he therefore expects a similar imprint.

As for the name of the vehicle, it will certainly not be “Macan”. When the first generation model will be removed from the market in 2026, Porsche will reserve this name exclusively at the second generation, purely electric. There will be about two years apart between the end of the production of the original Macan and that of his direct successor.

Initially, the company did not plan to develop another crossover with thermal engine, betting everything on the electric Macan. However, she had to face the fact that electric vehicles did not gain popularity as Porsche had hoped, which forced management to reconsider her position.
