Purchasing power: More “rich” with the German minimum wage than Luxembourgish

If the minimum Luxembourg social salary is the highest in Europe, it is not the most advantageous for workers, the fault at sometimes exorbitant prices.

In Luxembourg, the minimum social salary amounted, early 2025, to 2,638 euros per month. It is the highest in Europe, ahead of the Netherlands (2,193 euros) and Germany (2,161 euros). But are the employees of the Grand Duchy paid at least, even more comfortable in Luxembourg than in other countries?

Not necessarily, explains the Minister CSV of Labor, Georges Mischo, in response to questions from the socialist deputy Mars di Bartolomeo. To really be able to compare, it is necessary to take into account the price differences between the countries and to convert the salary as a standard purchasing power (SPA).

The index to the rescue

In this little game, Germany passes in front of Luxembourg, with 1,992 euros monthly spa, against 1,969 for the Grand Duchy. The cost of living, for example housing, explains this difference in particular. The index, however, saves the most poorly paid employees in Luxembourg.

Indeed, the indexing entered into force on May 1 brought the monthly minimum wage to 2,703.74 euros, or 15,6285 euros per hour, against 12.82 euros per hour in Germany. Our neighbors on the other side of the Moselle nevertheless planned to bring their minimum wages to 13.90 euros per hour in January 2026.
