Paudex (VD): Rescue of an injured lamb: “they were not entitled”
In March, a mother and daughter entered a municipal plot to rescue a baby sheep. For the municipality in question, it was not appropriate.

Pixabay“We were alerted by cries from an enclosure near us. Approaching, we saw a lamb, which still had the umbilical cord, being trampled on by the rest of the herd. We wanted to save him. We acted under the emotion. ” In March, Chantal* and her 25 -year -old daughter entered a plot belonging to the town of Paudex (VD) to rescue the animal in distress. They were not congratulated.
“They gave him the bottle”
This Saturday, mother and daughter, who, according to them, could not join the municipal employee in charge of sheep, led the lamb in order to a veterinarian. Between care, care and prescription for substitution milk, they spent 170 francs. “My daughter and her boyfriend then took her home and took care of it overnight. They put it warm and gave it the bottle, ”says Chantal.
But the next day, when they rendered her mother, the latter rejected him. “We learned after the fact that he had a malformation. They had to put him to sleep a few days later. We were sad, ”says Chantal. Today, the family is all the more knowing that the municipality of Paudex, owner of the herd, has only reimbursed half of the veterinarian’s fees.
Basically, ok, but not on the form
On the merits, the objective of their action is “laudable”, estimates the municipal secretary Nicolas Chamorel, but “the form was not appropriate”. “These people were not allowed to enter the town of the commune, action, which is also risky in view of the presence of a ram, nor to take an animal with them,” he said.
The man continues: “In such a case, it is first necessary to contact the owner of the animals and, failing to succeed in reaching him, of calling the police. The police are confirmed. ” Nicolas Chamorel declares that mother and daughter “are liable for the invoice” because “they called on a veterinarian of their own”, and according to him, before the manager of the roads was informed. It is therefore “to please” that half of the costs were reimbursed to them.
Service of the cantonal veterinarian available
Paola Rüegg, assistant cantonal veterinarian, declares that it is also possible, in this type of situation, to warn the cantonal veterinary service. The latter specifies that citizens who are aimed at this service for animals in distress, it exists, but that “generally, these are trying to announce the case, without going so far as to recover the animal”.
