Sexual assault in Mashteuiatsh: the former police chief of the Innu Community Order

The former director of public security in Mashteuiatsh, an innue community in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, is accused of sexual assault.

Mathieu Launière was arrested on March 25 by the Independent Investigation Office (BEI). Released pending the continuation of the procedures, he appeared Thursday at the Roberval courthouse.

He currently faces accusations of sexual assault and entry into entry. The facts would have occurred in 2013, in a residence located within the Innu community.

The man has taken place in April 2022 as Director of Public Security at Mashteuiatsh, but he has already held this position in a temporary manner for two years.

The gestures allegedly allegedly would have been committed before he occupied this function. However, the latter had 13 years of police experience behind the tie at the time.

Recall that Mathieu Launière was suspended in August 2024 without the organization explaining the reasons given this decision.

“This arrest concludes a survey of several months and testifies to the important work of BEI investigators in the maintenance of public confidence and the police against their police institutions,” said the BEI by press release.

The organization stresses that it treats all the allegations relating to a sexual offense committed by a police officer in service, whether it is a police body of the First Nations or not.
