The last case of measles in Ottawa appeared as an emergency of the general campus of the Ottawa hospital.
The hospital immediately alerted its staff, patients and those present at the scene who could have been exposed to the measles virus as well as the contaminated person.
“Ottawa hospital is collaborating closely with Ottawa public health in order to determine whether people who could have been exposed to measles are immune to the virus in order to define the measures to be taken from people who are not,” said the hospital in a public opinion.
Ottawa Public Health has communicated with all the people who could have been exposed, but specifies that not all are directly reachable or identifiable.
As a result, the municipality’s public health agency published the various places where public members could have been exposed to the virus, between August 5 and 8.
All those who have visited these places during given hours are invited to actively monitor the appearance of symptoms for 21 days, even if these are vaccinated

Monitor symptoms
The most common initial symptoms of measles include: a strong fever, a cough, a nasal flow, white spots in the mouth and red and tearful eyes which can be sensitive to light.
They generally appear between seven to 12 days after exposure to the highly transmitted virus of measles.
Measles is a particularly contagious viral respiratory infection.
“An affected person can transmit infection to 18 people on average. As a comparison, someone who has the flu infects two or three people on average, “said Dr. Paul Roumelotis, hygienist doctor and managing director of the eastern Ontario Health Office, last March.
However, the Ottawa Hospital and the city’s public health agency are reassuring.
“Currently, the risk for the general population remains low. There is currently no proof of local transmission of measles in Ottawa ”.

Immunization or not
People born after 1970 are immune to life if they have received their two doses of the measles vaccine. It is generally estimated that those born before 1970 have probably had measles in the past and are therefore immune from the start.
For unprotected people who think they have been exposed to the virus, it is recommended to isolate themselves in your home for one to two weeks after the exposure date and be vaccinated as quickly as possible.
On August 5, 2025, Ontario declared a total of 2,360 cases of measles (2049 confirmed cases and 311 probable cases), that is to say almost half of the cases identified across the country.
In Quebec, there have been 36 cases since the start of the year and no active exhibition location at the moment. The last wave of measles hatching in the province ended in April 2025, according to the Quebec government.
